Ashok Lahiri takes charge as NITI Aayog Vice Chairman

New Delhi: Former chief economic advisor replaces Suman Bery renowned economist Ashok Kumar Lahiri on Friday officially assumed charge as the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, succeeding Suman Bery in the key policy-making role.

Lahiri, who has served as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India and was also a member of the 15th Finance Commission, brings decades of experience in economic policy, public finance, academia, and international institutions.

The appointment is being viewed as a significant move at a time when India is focusing on long-term economic reforms, infrastructure growth, digital transformation, and sustainable development strategies.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, NITI Aayog welcomed Lahiri’s appointment and highlighted his vast expertise across multiple sectors.

“His experience across academia, public institutions and international organisations will further strengthen NITI Aayog’s efforts towards evidence-based policymaking and economic transformation,” the organisation stated.

The policy think tank further said it looks forward to Lahiri’s contributions in advancing India’s development agenda and supporting strategic policy initiatives across sectors.

Extensive experience in economic policymaking

Ashok Lahiri is widely recognised for his contributions to economic policy and fiscal management in India. During his tenure as Chief Economic Advisor, he played an important role in shaping economic reforms and advising the government on macroeconomic strategies.

He also served as a member of the 15th Finance Commission, which was responsible for recommending the distribution of financial resources between the Centre and states.

Apart from his government roles, Lahiri has worked with international organisations and academic institutions, gaining expertise in economic governance, taxation, fiscal policy, and development planning.

Economists and policy experts believe his experience could help strengthen NITI Aayog’s role in designing data-driven and evidence-based policy frameworks for the country.

Key role at NITI Aayog

As Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, Lahiri will play a major role in guiding policy recommendations, coordinating with state governments, and supporting the Centre’s long-term economic and developmental goals.

NITI Aayog serves as the Government of India’s premier public policy think tank and works closely with ministries, states, and experts to formulate development strategies across sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, innovation, and digital economy.

The Vice Chairman position is considered one of the most influential policy advisory roles in the country.

Officials said Lahiri’s appointment comes at a crucial phase when India is targeting faster economic growth, industrial expansion, job creation, and increased global competitiveness.
