Ashwin did not follow anything blindly – WV Raman
New Delhi New Delhi: Former cricketer WV Raman turned back the time and remembered the early days of one of India's finest spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin. The 38-year-old Ashwin is coming of age and is rewriting the history books in the final stages of his career. After making his debut for India in 2010, he rose through the ranks and earned a place for himself. Before leaving his indelible mark on the global stage, Ashwin worked hard in the domestic setup and made a name for himself by becoming his “own man”. Raman, who has kept a close eye on Ashwin's play as the head coach for Tamil Nadu, praised the veteran star for his attitude of not following things blindly.
“There is a culture in our country that encourages people to say good morning or good evening. Players who do that are very much appreciated,” Raman said on “Cricket Petta”, a Tamil cricket podcast launched by Sony Sports Network. Those who don't get encouragement, they don't get that much support. So, in that sense, Ashwin didn't follow things blindly and moved forward in his own way. ”
Arun Karthik, who played with Ashwin at the junior level, revealed that Ashwin used to play as an opening batsman in Under-17. But his stint as a batsman in Under-19 was not good so he started bowling. “We played together at the junior level. He was an opening batsman. He played as a batsman in Under 17 and his batting was not very good in Under 19. Then he started bowling seriously and did really well. Arun told about the early days of Ashwin.
