Ashwin slams Hardik’s captaincy vs RCB

mumbai: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin launched a sharp critique of Hardik Pandya, questioning his captaincy decisions during Mumbai Indians’ heavy defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium.

Ashwin did not hold back as he dissected key tactical errors, particularly Mumbai’s bowling strategy against RCB skipper Rajat Patidarwhose aggressive knock proved decisive in the high-scoring encounter.

Ashwin questions bowling tactics against Patidar

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Ashwin pointed out that Mumbai’s think tank overlooked Patidar’s well-known strength against spin bowling.

He referenced a previous match from IPL 2024, where Patidar had dominated leg-spinner Mayank Markande, smashing four sixes in a single over. Despite that precedent, MI opted to introduce Markande against Patidar once again — a move Ashwin termed questionable.

According to Ashwin, the decision backfired almost immediately, as Patidar attacked from the outset and cleared the ropes with ease.

“Not the smartest move,” says Ashwin

Ashwin was blunt in his assessment, stating that the move played directly into the batter’s strengths.

He highlighted that Markande conceded 40 runs in just two overs, finishing with an economy rate of 20.00. Ashwin described the tactic as “very, very average”, stressing that better match awareness was required in such high-pressure situations.

The veteran spinner emphasised the importance of understanding player match-ups, especially in T20 cricket where margins are minimal and tactical errors are often heavily punished.

Spinners prove expensive for Mumbai

Mumbai’s troubles were not limited to one bowler. Fellow spinner Mitchell Santner also had an expensive outing, conceding 43 runs in his four overs.

Collectively, MI’s spinners leaked 83 runs in just six overs, a factor Ashwin believes made a significant difference in the final outcome.

He noted that such expensive spells widened the gap between a defendable total and a daunting one, effectively allowing RCB to push their score well beyond the 230-mark.

RCB capitalise with dominant batting display

RCB made full use of Mumbai’s bowling lapses, piling up a massive 240/4 in their 20 overs. Patidar led from the front with a blistering innings, while Virat Kohli provided stability at the other end.

The innings was further boosted by contributions from Phil Salt and others, as RCB maintained a high scoring rate throughout.

Mumbai Indians, despite a spirited chase, fell short of the target, with the game effectively slipping away during the middle overs when RCB seized control.

Conclusion

Ravichandran Ashwin’s analysis underscores how crucial tactical decisions can shape the outcome of T20 matches. His criticism of Hardik Pandya highlights the importance of reading match-ups and adapting strategies accordingly.

For Mumbai Indians, the loss serves as a reminder that even small miscalculations — especially in bowling changes — can have significant consequences in high-scoring contests. As the IPL 2026 season progresses, all eyes will be on how Hardik and his team respond to such scrutiny.
