New Delhi 17 February. India is expected to add 20,000 more GPUs, taking the total available capacity to more than the current 38,000 GPUs, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Tuesday, which is aimed at strengthening the country’s AI compute infrastructure.
Ashwini Vaishnav, while talking to reporters on the second day of the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam here, also told that the AI related investments at the summit are likely to be more than USD 200 billion, which includes USD 90 billion already decided.

It is noteworthy that a GPU or graphics processing unit is a powerful computer chip, which helps machines think faster, process images, run AI programs and handle complex tasks better than regular processors. Under the IndiaAI mission, more than 38,000 high-end GPUs have been inducted and are available at around Rs 65 per hour, which is about one-third of the global average price.
Vaishnav said the next phase of India’s AI strategy will put design and research and development at its core, moving beyond basic infrastructure to building solutions tailored to India’s needs. The government is in talks with several big companies about further investment in AI infrastructure, although names cannot be disclosed at this stage. What he said is that AI awareness initiatives are already being implemented in schools in both rural and urban areas, incorporating India’s cultural context and regional languages in AI development.

On the regulatory front, Vaishnav said a greater consensus is emerging among global leaders on the techno-legal approach to AI governance. India is currently in touch with about 30 countries on technological collaboration and policy development in Artificial Intelligence.

He said, ‘Netflix, Meta or any other company will have to work under the constitutional framework of the country in which they are operating. Demand for more stringent regulation on deepfakes
Addressing concerns over misinformation and harm online, Vaishnav called for stricter regulation of deepfakes, especially to protect children. He said, ‘We need more stringent regulation on deepfakes and we need to build consensus in Parliament.’ He also said that content regulation should be implemented based on age. The government has already discussed necessary further measures with industry stakeholders.

He said, ‘Copyright is also important, we believe that content creators should get their rights for the content created by them.
