Indian team won 33 medals in Asian Youth-Junior Weightlifting Championship 2024

New Delhi. The Indian contingent concluded its campaign at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday, securing a total of 33 medals. The championship featured competitions in 40 categories, with 20 competitions each at the junior and youth levels. Medals were awarded separately in each weightlifting category for snatch, clean and jerk and overall.

India's young lifters (aged 13 to 17) led the way, winning 21 medals, including all seven gold. Junior lifters (aged 15 to 20) contributed 12 medals to the tally. 16-year-old Jyoshna Sabar from Uttar Pradesh made headlines on the first day. Competing in the women's youth 40 kg category, Jyoshana won three gold medals by lifting a total of 135 kg (60 kg snatch + 75 kg clean & jerk), setting a new Asian record overall.

Payal (women's 45 kg) and Sanjana (women's 76 kg) won five medals each in the junior and youth categories. Payal earned a gold medal in the total and snatch categories of 155 kg (70 kg snatch + 85 kg clean & jerk) and a bronze medal in the clean & jerk at the youth level. She also won bronze medals in the women's junior 45 kg total and clean and jerk.

17-year-old Sanjana, who lifted a personal best of 230 kg (90 kg snatch + 120 kg clean and jerk), won five silver medals, missing out by a narrow margin in the junior snatch category. One of the pre-tournament favourites, Dhanush Loganathan, the only Indian lifter to win a medal at this year's IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships, missed out in the men's junior 55kg.

Koel Bar (Women's Youth 55kg) and Sairaj Pardeshi (Men's Youth 81kg) added gold medals to India's kitty, while Neelam Devi won three silver medals in the Women's Junior 55kg.
