Asia’s largest economy vows to expand visa-free entry scheme to boost tourist spending

The policy package also calls on airlines to provide more discounted fares for connecting flights with extended layovers in China, while local governments are encouraged to host additional sporting events to attract tourists, Reuters reported.

Inbound tourism has shown a strong recovery, with 154.5 million visits recorded in 2025, up 17.1%, China Global Television Network reported.

Of that total, 35.17 million were foreign travelers.

Spending by inbound tourists rose sharply by 39.2% to $131.1 billion, indicating a rebound in global travel demand.

Visa-free schemes continued to drive growth, with 30.08 million foreign visitors entering China without a visa, marking a 49.5% increase.

Last year, China extended its visa-free entry for 45 countries, many in Europe, South America and the Gulf region besides Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea, until the end of 2026.
