Phu Quoc, voted Asia’s most beautiful island by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, received 1.2 million visitors in the first two months of this year, up 55.4% year-on-year, driven by upgraded infrastructure and intensified promotional campaigns.

The island also welcomed 319,000 foreign tourists during the period, up 63% year-on-year, according to An Giang Province’s Department of Tourism.

Phu Quoc has recently become a bright spot of Vietnam’s tourism thanks to its upgraded infrastructure and increased promotional campaigns.

According to U.S. magazine Travel + Leisurethe appeal of Phu Quoc lies in its ability to preserve an atmosphere that many established tropical destinations have gradually lost.

“Phu Quoc carries something more established destinations struggle to maintain: the sense of discovery. Phuket and Bali are crowded and well-trodden, but Phu Quoc offers the appeal of an emerging destination when everyone is looking for a new place to escape to,” the magazine wrote.

Amid the local travel boom, Phu Quoc authorities recently established a tourism rapid response team to better protect visitors and address service-related concern.

The Vietnam’s largest island expects to receive 8.5 million tourists this year, up 5% from last year, including two million foreigners, an 11% increase.
