Asia’s richest nation remains world’s leading maritime center in 2026
The ISCDI Report said the recognition is attributed to Singapore’s strategic location, established maritime services, and importance to alternative fuel development and technological innovation, said the report.
The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore said on July 10 that the continued recognition reflects the strong commitment and collective efforts of industry partners and the wider maritime community.

In 2025, the Port of Singapore handled a record 44.66 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in container throughput and 3.22 billion gross tonnage in vessel arrivals. The port also maintained its position as the world’s largest bunkering hub, supplying a record 56.77 million tonnes of marine fuel, including growing volumes of alternative fuels, the MPA said.
The index is jointly published by Chinese news agency Xinhua and London-based maritime market data firm Baltic Exchange. It evaluates 43 international shipping centers, taking into account port performance, professional maritime services and the wider business environment.
Singapore was named the richest country in Asia and sixth in the world in the 2026 Prosperity Index released by insurance comparison platform HelloSafe, which builds the index from five indicators drawn from the IMF, the World Bank, the UNDP and the OECD: GDP per capita in purchasing power parity, gross national income per capita, the Human Development Index, the Gini measure of income inequality, and the relative poverty rate.
Earlier this year the Southeast Asia’s city-state was ranked by the Economist the world’s second richest country after Switzerland in terms of GDP per capita.
