‘Aseem Munir should not be respected, he should be arrested…’ Big statement by former Pentagon official, America should apologize to India

American The debate has once again intensified regarding policies and Washington’s relations with Pakistan. Former Pentagon official Michael Rubin has put America’s Pakistan policy in the dock and said that Washington’s attitude towards Islamabad is beyond any strategic logic. He alleged that many policies and activities of Pakistan are completely against American interests.

Rubin also said that the US should declare Pakistan a “state sponsor of terrorism”. He particularly reacted strongly to Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to the White House and said that if Munir were to set foot on American soil, “he should be arrested instead of given respect.”

Questions on America-Pakistan relations

According to ANI report, Michael Rubin clearly said “There is no strategic logic for the US to embrace Pakistan. It should not be a major non-NATO ally. It should be declared a state sponsor of terrorism, that’s all. If Asim Munir comes to the US, he should be arrested instead of being honored.” He says that Pakistan has been accused of supporting extremist organizations for a long time, yet America continues to give strategic importance to Islamabad, which itself is harmful for American interests.

Emphasis on demand of apology from India

Rubin also expressed concern over trade tensions that have arisen with India in recent months. In August, America had imposed 50% additional tariff on Indian imports when India bought Russian oil, while only 19% tariff was imposed on Pakistan. According to Rubin, this decision was clearly wrong and Washington should apologize to India.

He said, “We need quiet diplomacy behind the scenes and perhaps, at some point, a more vocal apology from the United States for the way we have treated India over the last year… President Donald Trump does not like to apologize, but the interests of the United States, of the world democracies, are more important than the ego of one person.”

Aseem Munir becomes defense chief

The power equations in Pakistan are also changing rapidly. President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the country’s first Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) for five years. Besides, he has also got approval to continue on the post of Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This step is considered important towards further centralizing military power.

“President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as COAS along with CDF for five years,” the announcement issued by the President’s Office said. This appointment has been made at a time when there were speculations for weeks that the Shehbaz Sharif government was preparing to give more powers to Munir. The post of Chief of Defense Forces was created last month under the 27th Amendment of the Constitution.
