Seat distribution happened in Assam CM Sarma told everything, why is this time’s assembly elections special?
Assam NDA Seat Sharing News: The chessboard has been laid for the first and most historic assembly elections to be held after delimitation in Assam politics. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made it clear on Sunday that all is well in the NDA clan. The complex task of seat distribution has been successfully completed. The Chief Minister said with confidence that there is no doubt about who will fight where among the allies and now Delhi’s approval is just awaited.
Chief Minister Sarma said that the state leadership will soon leave for Delhi with the list of possible candidates. There will be a final round of discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the top leadership of BJP. It is believed that BJP may release its first list of candidates around Holi. This time, along with BJP, regional parties like Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), UPPL, BPF and Rabha Hasong are entering the electoral fray as a strong wall.
First assembly election after delimitation
This is the first assembly election in the state after the delimitation of constituencies in 2023. This delimitation has completely changed the electoral geography of Assam. The boundaries of many seats have changed and the names of some and reserved categories (SC/ST) have also changed. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is confident that the changed equations after delimitation will protect the interests of the indigenous people and take the NDA closer to majority.
Challenges of opposition and game of numbers
At present, BJP has 64 MLAs in the 126-member assembly, while including allies this number reaches 83. On the other hand, the joining of Bhupen Bora, former president of the main opposition party Congress, in BJP today is being considered as a big psychological blow for the opposition, where Congress has 26 MLAs and AIUDF has 15 MLAs. At the same time, BJP is eyeing to take its number of seats beyond 70 this time.
