Assam: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma files defamation case of Rs 500 crore against Congress leaders

Guwahati, 10 February. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday filed a Rs 500 crore defamation case against senior Congress leaders like Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi. He said the allegations regarding his land were ‘false’ and ‘ill-conceived’.

Gaurav Gogoi CM of Assam but made these allegations

In fact, this step of the Assam Chief Minister comes after a press conference of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi on February 4, in which he had claimed that the party’s ‘investigation’ had found that about 12,000 bighas of land across the state “has been encroached upon by the Chief Minister and his family.”

Hours after the allegations were made, the Chief Minister of Assam announced that he would file a defamation case for making the claims without any evidence. The defamation case demanding damages of Rs 500 crore was finally filed on Tuesday.

CM filed defamation case

CM Sarma said in a post on X, ‘Today, I have filed a defamation case against Congress leaders – Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi, demanding damages of Rs 500 crore because they have made false, ill-intentioned and defamatory allegations against me through a press conference. Apart from this, Gaurav Gogoi, in a separate press conference on Monday, also accused the Chief Minister of ‘inciting genocide’ against Muslims and promoting communal hatred.

Himanta Biswa said on Owaisi filing official complaint

In another development, Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted strongly to AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi filing an official complaint with the police over a now deleted video and said that he has no objection to being arrested and said that he stands by his word that he is against Bangladeshi infiltrators.

I am against Bangladeshi infiltrators: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam said, ‘I am ready to go to jail, what can I do? I don’t know anything about any video. If they have filed a case against me, arrest me; What objection do I have? I don’t mind. But I stand by my words, I am against Bangladeshi infiltrators and will remain against them.”

The development came after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi lodged an official complaint with the Hyderabad City Police on Monday, demanding criminal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He had complained about a “now deleted video” that allegedly showed violence against Muslims. He called it “genocidal hate speech”.
