Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s announcement: World’s second railway underwater tunnel will be built under Brahmaputra.

Guwahati, 15 February. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the Numaligarh Tunnel under the Brahmaputra River will be the world’s second underwater tunnel, which will be able to ease rail traffic. He described this project as a game-changer for connectivity and strategic logistics in the North-East.

Estimated cost of Gohpur-Numaligarh Tunnel is Rs 18,622 crore.

CM Himanta said the Gohpur-Numaligarh Tunnel, estimated to cost Rs 18,622 crore, will be built under the Brahmaputra river and will be designed for both road and rail traffic. Once completed, the project will greatly reduce travel time between northern and upper Assam, while also strengthening defense and freight transportation across the region.

The Chief Minister said that the tunnel’s ability to support rail operations puts it in the group of very small projects across the world, which shows its technical and strategic importance. He further said that this tunnel will improve connectivity throughout the year even during floods and will play an important role in movements related to emergency and national security.

A ropeway project will be built in Kamakhya for crowd control.

Among other major infrastructure projects, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a ropeway project will be built in Kamakhya, starting from Kamakhya station to reduce crowding and ease access for pilgrims visiting the holy temple. This project is expected to give a major boost to religious tourism in Guwahati.

Preparation of ring road connecting Guwahati Airport to Jalukbari.

The Chief Minister also informed that a ring road connecting Guwahati Airport to Jalukbari has been planned at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500 crore. This road will reduce traffic inside the city and access to the airport will be fast and easy.

Four lane highway also announced from Baihata Chariyali to Tezpur

Himanta Biswa Sarma also announced construction of a four-lane highway from Baihata Chariyali to Tezpur, which will entail an investment of about Rs 14,000 crore. This will strengthen connectivity along an important economic corridor in Central Assam.

Projects worth Rs 600 crore ready for Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital

He informed that projects worth Rs 600 crore have been prepared for Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital, so that the facilities can be upgraded and advanced treatment services can be increased. The scale of these projects reflects Assam’s rapid infrastructure-led growth with strong support from the Centre, making the state a vital connectivity and logistics hub for the Northeast.
