Voters decreased in other states due to SIR, but the whole story changed in Assam; How did voters increase in the voter list?
Assam Sir: Voter list in many states of the country Special Intensive Revision (SIR) While there has been a huge decline in the number of voters since then, Assam has reversed this entire trend. During the purification of voter list in Assam, an increase of 1.35 percent has been recorded in the number of voters. The latest draft electoral roll data released by the Assam Election Commission has sparked a new debate in political circles. The question being raised is that when voters are decreasing in the entire country, then how did the voters increase in Assam? Is there infiltration, technical process or any legal compulsion behind this?
Voters increased in draft voter list
On Tuesday, the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam released the new draft voter list. Compared to the voter list of January 2025, this time an increase of 1.35 percent has been recorded in the number of voters. This figure presents a completely different picture from the rest of the states of the country.
Number of women voters is more than men
The figures of Assam are also very important from the point of view of demography. A total of about 1.25 crore male and 1.26 crore female voters have been registered in the state. That is, for the first time the number of women voters has exceeded that of men, which reflects the changing social structure of the state.
Why didn’t it happen in Assam SIR?
No Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was done regarding the voter list in Assam. Here the voter list was checked only under ‘Special Revision’, in which the names of fake, dead or duplicate voters were removed. The process of strict door-to-door verification, as was done in other states, was not implemented in Assam.
How was the process different from other states?
Door-to-door verification was done at the booth level during SIR in about 12 states including Bihar and West Bengal. Names of doubtful, dead or transferred voters were removed from the list in large numbers, leading to a sharp decline in voter numbers. In contrast, in Assam, only a limited amount of revision took place, resulting in no major reduction in the voter list.
NRC became the biggest reason
The biggest reason behind the separate process of voter list in Assam is NRC i.e. National Register of Citizens. The issue of citizenship is extremely sensitive in Assam and the process of NRC update is still going on under the supervision of the Supreme Court and has not been completed. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had clarified that there are separate provisions for Assam under the Citizenship Act and due to the supervision of the Supreme Court, the process here has been kept separate from other states.
