Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar: India’s iconic singer-sisters connected in death

As destiny and coincidence would have it, both sisters, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, passed away on the same day and at the same age. Asha Bhosle, 92, died on Sunday, April 12, while Lata Mangeshkar, also 92, breathed her last on February 6, 2022, which was also a Sunday, after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

After news of Bhosle’s death broke, a throwback photograph of the sisters began doing the rounds on social media. The photo was originally shared by Bhosle in 2022. The monochrome image captures the two sisters posing for the camera.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Minister of Cultural Affairs, Ashish Shelar, confirmed that the legendary singer’s last rites will take place in Mumbai on Monday.

A year before her passing, the legendary singer had spoken about her final wish during an appearance on the podcast Couple of Things, hosted by Amrita Rao and RJ Anmol. During the conversation, she expressed her desire to spend her final moments doing what she loved the most, and that’s singing.

She said, “My own wish is such that I keep singing. This is my wish. Now I don’t have the power to learn. Singing is my life. I have been singing since childhood. Classical since 3 years, Baba’s teaching. The whole life has been singing in it. (My only wish is to die singing. That’s my last wish. I don’t have anything left to learn. Singing is my life. I have been doing that since the age of 3 with my father.”

“It’s been 82 years in the film industry. Now, all I want is to die singing. I will be the happiest if I keep singing through my last days),” she had added.

Not many know that Asha Bhosle ji, revered as one of India’s most iconic voices, was also a deeply sincere spiritual seeker. She practised meditation with unwavering dedication every single day.

She remained a familiar and cherished presence at the Art of Living ashram and the Sri Sri University, embodying grace, devotion, and quiet strength. As we fondly remember Asha Tai today, we are sharing her last composition, a beatutiful devotional tribute offered to Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Asha Bhosle’s last public appearance

Asha Bhosle’s final public appearance was on March 5 at the wedding celebration of cricketer Arjun Tendulkar and Saaniya Chandhok in Mumbai. The event was hosted by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali Tendulkar.

Her funeral is expected to be attended by several prominent personalities from the film industry, politics and other fields as fans across the country continue to mourn the loss of the legendary singer.

Asha Bhosle began her singing career at the early age of nine in 1943. By that time, her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, had already carved a name for herself in the music industry. Throughout the 1950s, Asha was often introduced primarily as “Lata’s sister.”

Despite delivering several superhit numbers, she was largely limited to a certain type of songs, mainly dance numbers and cabaret tracks. However, as new composers emerged, things began to turn in Bhosle’s favour. They started placing their trust in the younger Mangeshkar sister, and Asha proved them right.

With songs like “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (Hare Rama Hare Krishna) and “O Haseena Zulfon Wali” (Teesri Manzil), Asha Bhosle dominated the dance number genre in Bollywood for over two decades.

During the 1960s and 1970s, her voice became synonymous with screen icon Helen. If a film featured a song picturised on Helen, it was almost certain that Asha was behind the microphone. While she explored other musical styles, this genre became her defining signature.
