Attack on Saudi has become Pakistan’s ‘red line’, now should Iran-America save friendship or support Riyadh?
New Delhi: Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, Pakistan seems to be stuck in a difficult diplomatic situation. On the one hand, it has played an important role in talks between America and Iran, while on the other hand, its defense agreement with Saudi Arabia also gives it the responsibility to openly stand in support of Riyadh. In such a situation, if there is a direct conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia, it may be very difficult for Pakistan to remain neutral.
Pakistan’s dual role becomes a challenge
According to Reuters report, Pakistan played the role of mediator towards the interim agreement between America and Iran in June. In September 2025, a mutual defense agreement was signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Under this agreement, thousands of Pakistani soldiers and a fighter aircraft squadron are already deployed in Saudi Arabia.
Attack on Saudi called ‘red line’
A Pakistani official, on condition of anonymity, said that Islamabad has given a clear message to Iran that an attack on Saudi Arabia will be considered an attack on Pakistan. After this statement, questions are being raised on the role of Pakistan as an impartial mediator. If Saudi’s security is its priority, then it will not be easy for it to have fair talks with Iran.
Concern increased due to Houthi attacks
Recently, Iran-backed Houthi rebels of Yemen launched missile attacks on Saudi Arabia. The Houthis allege that the Saudi Army had bombed the airport under their control. After this incident, the ceasefire that had been going on for four years was broken and tension increased in the entire area.
What is Pakistan afraid of?
Experts believe that if the conflict escalates further, Pakistani soldiers deployed near the Yemen border may also fall prey to it. Apart from this, Pakistan’s trade and energy supply may also be affected due to the movement of ships in the Red Sea being affected. Earlier also, during the tension in the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan had to face a situation like fuel crisis.
The security strategy of the Gulf is changing
Analysts believe that Saudi Arabia no longer wants to depend only on America for security. This is the reason why it has strengthened defense partnership with allied countries like Pakistan, but this partnership is now becoming a diplomatic challenge for Pakistan.
