The medical staff present nearby did not intervene. He was declared dead shortly after being taken to a hospital in Utica, The New York Times reports. Attorney General Letitia James described the video as “shocking and disturbing” and has launched an investigation that could result in criminal charges against the officers involved. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy, with preliminary findings indicating that the cause of death was asphyxiation, the NYT reports. Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered the firing of 14 prison employees, including 13 officers and a nurse, involved in the attack.
