He said, many ships of the world are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, among them a large number of Indian crew members. This is also a matter of great concern for India. In such a critical situation, it is necessary that the united voice of peace and dialogue from this Upper House of the Parliament of India should reach the entire world. Since the beginning of the war I have had two rounds of phone talks with the heads of state of most of the countries in West Asia. We are continuously talking with all the Gulf countries. We are also in touch with Iran, Israel and America. Our aim is to restore peace in the region through dialogue and diplomacy.

PM Modi said, attacks on commercial ships and blockage of international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz are unacceptable. India has opposed attacks on civilians, on civil infrastructure, on energy and transport related infrastructure. India is making continuous efforts through diplomacy for the safe passage of Indian ships even in this environment of war. India has suggested the only way to solve this problem is through dialogue. India is trying to ensure that ships carrying all such essential goods, be it oil, gas, fertilizers, etc., reach India safely. Any crisis, it tests both our courage and efforts. Continuous decisions have been taken in the last 11 years so that the country can face such crises in a better way.

He said, I want to assure the House and the country that India has arrangements for adequate storage and continuous supply of crude oil. Our government is trying to avoid excessive dependence on a single source of fuel. Apart from LPG, the government is also emphasizing on PNG in domestic gas supply. For example, more than 90 percent of India’s trade takes place on foreign ships. This situation makes India’s position even more serious in any global crisis. Therefore, the government has started a campaign of about Rs 70 thousand crore to make Made in India ships. Over the years, the government has been making continuous efforts to minimize dependence on other countries in every sector. We should be as self-reliant as possible…this is the only option.

The PM further said, the current crisis has shaken the economy of the entire world. It will take a long time for the world to recover from the losses suffered so far in West Asia. Continuous efforts are being made to ensure that it has minimal side effects on India. The fundamentals of our economy are very strong. We also have to pay more attention to another challenge. At such times, black marketers and hoarders become very active. Wherever such complaints come from, immediate action should be taken.
