“Attention hasn’t changed,” Arteta’s comment on Gyökeres sparks debate at Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s latest remarks on Viktor Gyökeres have raised eyebrows among Arsenal fans, with the Spaniard insisting that the “level of attention” on the striker has not changed despite his slow adaptation to English football.
Speaking after Arsenal’s latest outing, Arteta addressed the scrutiny surrounding Gyökeres, saying: “I think the level of attention on Gyökeres hasn’t changed since he signed, to today, that’s normal.” While intended as a calm assessment, the statement has sparked debate, with many supporters questioning whether the club is downplaying the pressure on their long-awaited No. 9.
Arsenal fans were “excited to bring a No. 9 into the club,” as Arteta himself admitted. Gyökeres arrived with an “incredible scoring record,” and expectations were sky-high from day one. However, his early weeks were far from smooth. The striker had no pre-season, struggled physically, and needed time to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League.
Arteta defended the Swede, explaining that the striker’s game relies heavily on physical sharpness. “The first few weeks were difficult because physically he wasn’t in his best,” the manager said, before adding that Gyökeres eventually “kicked on.”
