Australian Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri out of race before start – Why the McLaren driver could not race

The opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season delivered a dramatic moment even before the lights went out, as hometown driver Oscar Piastri crashed his McLaren on the reconnaissance lap ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, March 8.

Piastri had qualified in an impressive fifth position and was expected to be one of the main attractions for Australian fans at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. However, his race ended before it could even begin.

What happened before the race start?

During the reconnaissance lap — the lap drivers complete from the pit lane to reach their grid positions — Piastri lost control of his car after riding a kerb, reportedly at the exit of Turn 4.

The McLaren spun and hit the barriers, causing heavy damage to the front-right suspension and bodywork. Although the crash occurred at relatively low speed, the damage was significant enough that the car could not continue.

Piastri climbed out safely, but the incident meant his car never made it to the starting grid.

Why Piastri was ruled out despite the race not starting

In Formula 1, drivers must successfully complete the reconnaissance procedures and reach the grid in a race-ready car. If a driver crashes or the car suffers major damage before reaching the grid, the team must repair it before the race start.

In Piastri’s case, the impact caused structural damage that McLaren could not fix in time before the formation lap began. As a result, the team was forced to withdraw the car.

Technically, this is not considered a disqualification. Instead, it is recorded as a “Did Not Start (DNS)” because the driver failed to take the start of the race.

Huge disappointment for the home crowd

The early exit was particularly painful for local fans, as Piastri was one of the biggest hopes for Australia in the race. The Melbourne-born driver was aiming for a strong start to the season after qualifying inside the top five.

His crash also left an empty slot on the grid where he was supposed to line up in fifth place.

Chaotic start to the 2026 season

The 2026 Formula 1 season has already been marked by unpredictability due to the introduction of new regulations, including changes to aerodynamics and power units. Drivers have reported that the new cars behave very differently, which may have contributed to early incidents during the opening weekend.

For Piastri, the crash means he will have to wait until the next round of the championship to begin his 2026 campaign.

The race at Albert Park went ahead without him, turning what was meant to be a dream home race into a heartbreaking start to the season.
