Australian Open: Sabalenka, Bencic reach round of 16

Melbourne�मेलबर्न : Reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka defeated 42nd-ranked Danish player Clara Tausen in the third round on Friday to ensure her entry into the fourth round of the ongoing Australian Open. Sabalenka won the match 7–6(5), 6–4 at Rod Laver Arena.

In their first meeting, top seed Sabalenka was trailing 3-5 in the opening set and staged a comeback to defeat her opponent in nearly two hours and six minutes.

“She put pressure on me. She (her opponent) played great tennis under pressure. Her level was great. If she continues to work, keep improving herself, play the way she played today, then Of course she will reach the top level,” Sabalenka said, according to the WTA website. Sabalenka will face 14th seed Mira Andreeva in the fourth round, with whom she leads 3-1 in the head-to-head record. Andreeva earned her first win against Sabalenka in the French Open quarterfinals last year.

Also, American tennis star Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the ongoing Australian Open with a win over Leyla Fernandez in the tournament on Friday. Gauff defeated Leyla 6–4, 6–2, marking the 14th time she has reached the second week of a Grand Slam event. 2024 was a great year for Gauff as she defended her Auckland Open title and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He started the year going undefeated at the United Cup and helped Team USA to the title. According to the WTA, she is currently on a 10-match win streak, which begins with a win at the WTA Finals Riyadh in late 2024. Now, she is set to face 2023 US champion and former Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic, who advanced to the next round after Naomi Osaka pulled out of the match due to injury. (ANI)
