Australia’s four leading short-form fast bowlers will miss at least the opening matches of the Indian Premier League, with Nathan Ellis likely to be ruled out of the entire tournament, reports cricket.com.au. It is believed that when cricket’s biggest annual tournament begins next weekend, none of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will be available for their respective franchises.
Cricket Australia is taking a cautious approach with its star multi-format bowlers as there is a lot to come: Starting in August, the Test team will play 21 matches over the course of 12 months. These include important tours of South Africa, India and England, after which the team will defend its ODI World Cup title in South Africa in late 2027. The availability of all three will depend on how their return-to-game protocols progress over the next few weeks.
pat cummins
The highest salary ($3.7m) for any Australian player in the IPL goes to Pat Cummins, who is the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad coached by Daniel Vettori. At the start of the tournament, the team will be captained by Ishan Kishan in his absence. Cummins will miss the first few matches due to injury. The absence of this experienced player and captain is going to be very painful for Sunrisers.

Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc (who gets $2.15m from Delhi Capitals) will leave a void in his teams bowling attack. Starc played in all five Ashes Tests and the final match of the KFC Big Bash League, but did not feature in the World Cup as he retired from T20 Internationals at the end of last year. Cricket Australia (CA) has clarified that Starc’s absence is part of their fitness management plan. Now his return will depend on the progress of recovery and fitness protocols.
Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood played a key role in helping Royal Challengers Bangalore win their first IPL trophy last season. But, he too will not be a part of the RCB camp in the initial stages of the tournament. He gets $2.29m from RCB. His absence is also part of Cricket Australia’s fitness management plan.

Chennai Super Kings fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire season due to hamstring injury. The 31-year-old Ellis was bought by the franchise for Rs 2 crore in the 2025 mega auction.
