Austria reaches Hyderabad, Telangana for FIH World Cup 2026 qualifiers
Austria women’s hockey team has reached Hyderabad ahead of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana. The tournament will see eight nations compete for three vital qualification spots for the bigger event to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands in August this year.
Austria has an illustrious history at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup, appearing in three of the first four editions of the competition. However, they have not been able to qualify for this major event since 1981.
Under the leadership of Johanna Cech, Austria will face England, Italy and Korea in Pool A as they look to make history and secure a qualification spot for the first time in 45 years.
Regarding the competition, the captain said, “This is the first time for all of us in India. So, we are excited and we want to play really good hockey. Our preparation before the tournament was minimal – we only had one training session – but we will give our best. We have a few training sessions here before our games, and we will leave everything on the pitch.”
Earlier, Italy women’s national hockey team reached Hyderabad on Thursday.
The tournament, to be held from March 8 to 14, will see eight nations compete for three vital spots in the much-awaited tournament to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands in August this year.
Italy have been placed in Pool A, where they will face England, Korea and Austria. The European team has qualified for the FIH Hockey World Cup twice before, first in 1976 and most recently in 2018, where they posted their best-ever finish of ninth.
Italy will begin their campaign with a match against England on March 8, followed by matches against Austria and Korea on March 9 and 11.
