Axar Patel speaks about Transformation in Indian cricket team
India’s star all-rounder Axar Patel has spoken about some sort of ‘transition’ within the Indian cricket team, as the Men in Blue gear up to face England in a five-match T20I series.
India’s all-rounder Axar Patel, who has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, has stated that there is a transition phase coming in the Indian team.
The reports of transition came in after seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket in the middle of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Vice-captain Axar Patel believes that he does not need to prove anything, and that his performance is automatically going to secure his place in the team.
“Yes, a transition phase is coming, and ultimately, it’s the selectors’ and captain’s call. I don’t feel the need to prove anything to anyone,” Axar stated.
“My approach is to focus on fulfilling the role assigned to me and continuously improving myself. If I perform well, my place in the team will take care of itself automatically,” he added.
Axar Patel also believes that he is an all-format player, who only focuses on giving his best when he gets an opportunity. He also explained how he does not take pressure on thinking whether he deserves a spot, and that it is just about the team.
“I just keep telling myself that I have played all three formats be it Tests, ODIs, or T20s. My focus is on doing well whenever I get an opportunity, rather than feeling the need to prove anything to anyone, whether I’m picked or not. I don’t take the pressure of thinking that I deserve a spot. It is always about the team combination and whether there is any room for me,” he concluded.
Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, are currently in Kolkata for the first T20I against England, set to begin January 22 at Eden Gardens. This is going to be the first international outing for the team after their humiliating show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
