During his visit to India in the early 1980s, Ali Khamenei was deeply impressed by a tragic incident that took place in Alipura village in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. When he learned that a pregnant woman had died on the way to Bengaluru due to the absence of a hospital nearby, this incident shocked him deeply. After this he decided to provide financial assistance to build a hospital in that area, so that the people of the village do not have to travel long distances for basic treatment.

According to India Today report, Supreme Leader’s representative Abdul Majeed Hakim Ilahi said that this incident took place during Ali Khamenei’s visit to India. Elahi said that the Iranian leader had deep affection for India and he often praised its diversity and civilization.

Ilahi said, “When he came here and went to Alipore, an incident happened. A woman had died there and people asked him to come and pray for her. He asked people why she died. Then people told him that she was pregnant and there was no hospital in the area. That’s why she was being taken to Bengaluru, but she died on the way.”

He further said, “He became very angry after hearing this. He said that he would give money to build a hospital here and he did so. Later a hospital was built there.” According to reports, Ali Khamenei’s visit to India took place at a time when Ruhollah Khomeini’s government had taken the initiative to increase diplomatic contacts after the Islamic Revolution. This visit took place when Khamenei became the President of Iran a few months later in October of the same year.

What was Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s attitude towards India?

Responding to a question about sectarian divisions in the Muslim world, Elahi said that unity among Muslims was an important part of Ali Khamenei’s thinking. In fact, Ilahi said, the ultimate goal of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was to increase unity among Muslims and awareness in society. I have met him several times and he often talked about coexistence in India.”

He told that Khamenei often gave the example of India, where people of different religions and communities live together. According to Ilahi, Ali Khamenei admired India a lot. He said, “He often praised India and Indians. He used to say that look, here there are many religions and different sections of society, yet they live together.”

Was Khamenei’s first book on India?

According to Ilahi, Ali Khamenei was interested in India from the very beginning of his life. He told, “The first book he wrote, when he was about 22 or 23 years old, was on India. It was written in two parts in Persian language and it discussed about India’s independence. Later he also tried to translate it into English.”

Elahi also mentioned a meeting between Khamenei and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He told that this meeting lasted much longer than the scheduled time. He said, “Once a former Prime Minister of India came to meet him. The meeting was scheduled for 15 to 20 minutes, but it lasted for more than one and a half hours. During this, he talked about his life, India and India’s civilization, culture and philosophy.” Ilahi said that at that time someone had jokingly said that he had more knowledge than any professor of Indian history.

Decades before becoming Iran’s most influential leader, Ali Khamenei had visited India as a young religious leader. In the 1980s, when he was about 41 years old, he visited Karnataka and Kashmir in the early years of the Islamic Revolution.
