How did the robbery happen in broad daylight?
A woman wearing a burqa arrived as a customer at Mahesh Jewelers located in Kothi Bazaar in Ayodhya at around 12:30 pm. He asked the shopkeeper to show him the gold necklace and chain. Shopkeeper Mahesh showed him many designs. The woman looked at the jewelery like a very normal customer, due to which no one suspected her at all.
How was the entire conspiracy hatched?
Police investigation revealed that Payal and Rahul had done complete planning in advance. Rahul had bought a fake pistol and burqa from the market, so that his identity could be hidden. Payal went inside the shop alone, while Rahul waited at some distance with his bike.
What happened when the shopkeeper became suspicious?
As soon as she got the chance, Payal picked up the gold necklace and chain and started putting it in the bag. When the shopkeeper tried to stop him, he took out a fake pistol from his waist, pointed it at him and threatened him. ‘If you move forward, I will shoot you’. On hearing this, there was chaos in the shop and Payal ran away from the spot.
How did the accused escape?
Payal came out of the shop and ran on foot and ran away sitting on Rahul’s bike standing at a short distance. Together they made away with gold jewelery worth about ₹3.6 lakh. The entire incident was captured in 6 CCTV cameras installed in the shop. The number of the bike was also recorded, which made it easier for the police to reach the accused. A case was registered on the complaint of bullion trader Mahesh and the police arrested both of them within a few hours.

ADG Zone Lucknow Praveen Kumar said that ‘two people have been arrested. The name of the girl who committed the robbery wearing a burqa is Payal, while the name of the boy present with her is Rahul. Both of them were committing this crime by posing as ‘Bunty and Babli’. According to the police, both are friends and they carried out the robbery by showing a toy pistol.
