Babar Azam opts out of big tournament to focus on his batting
Pakistan’s former captain and leading batter, Babar Azam, will sit out of the ongoing National T20 Championship to focus on improving his batting technique ahead of the Pakistan Super League, set to begin on March 26.
Babar was included in the Lahore Whites squad for the Peshawar-based tournament following a disappointing T20 World Cup and his exclusion from the recent ODI series in Bangladesh.
It has now emerged that Babar will skip the domestic tournament and focus on working with coaches to improve his batting.
While the identities of these coaches have not been disclosed, a source close to the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that Babar and the team management agreed he should concentrate on technical issues in his batting rather than participating in the National T20 Championship.
This move reflects an agreement between Babar and the team management to prioritise long-term improvement to regain his form. Babar is expected to play for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 11.
Once ranked number one in ICC batting charts across formats, Babar has struggled in the last few years . He was dropped from Pakistan’s final Super Eight match against Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup.
Babar has avoided domestic competitions since 2020, except for appearances in the PSL, and also skipped two first-class matches in Pakistan’s top-tier red-ball tournament late last year.
