Babar Azam’s debut in BBL was disappointing, bat did not work for Sydney Sixers

Babar Azam’s disappointing debut in Big Bash League

New Delhi: Pakistan’s leading batsman Babar Azam’s first match for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) proved to be very bad. Babar scored only 2 runs against Perth Scorchers, and due to this he was heavily trolled on social media.

Ever since Sydney signed him, there was a lot of buzz in his news. Questions were also being raised about Azam’s performance against fast bowling, and his poor form in the first game of the season further increased these fears.

Start of the match and effect of rain

The inaugural BBL match, played at Perth Stadium on 14 December 2025, saw play delayed due to rain and lightning. The match was reduced to 11-11 overs. Perth Scorchers won the toss and decided to bowl first. Sydney Sixers had a poor opening game, and Daniel Hughes was out without scoring in the first over.

A disappointing performance by Babur

Babar Azam came out to open but could not feel comfortable on the bouncy pitch of Perth. He did not score any runs on the first three balls. On the fourth ball, he played a shot and scored two runs, but on the very next ball, he tried to drive on the length ball of Brodie Couch. The ball went into the air after being hit by the top edge of the bat, and was caught by Laurie Evans at mid-on. Babar was able to score 2 runs after playing only 5 balls.

Fans’ reactions on social media

After Babar was out, he was trolled heavily on social media. Some described him as part of the “Hall of Shame in BBL”, while others jokingly said that Babar cheated the Sydney Sixers. The official account of BBL shared the video of Babar’s dismissal, which was taken as a joke by many fans.

Fans made funny comments on social media and made sharp jokes about Babar’s performance.

Performance of Pakistani players in BBL

Babar is not the only Pakistani batsman to play in the BBL this season. His teammates Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan and Hasan Ali will also play for different teams. Rizwan and Shaheen will face each other in the next match, when there will be a clash between the teams of Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat. Babar’s debut may have been disappointing, but his fans are confident that he will perform well in the upcoming matches.
