Marandi was the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand and assumed the post on 15 November 2000 on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket after the formation of Jharkhand. During his tenure many important schemes of infrastructure and development were initiated in the state.

However, after some time he separated from BJP and formed a new party named “Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik)”. Through this party, he raised his voice on the problems of tribal society and rural areas of Jharkhand. Subsequently, Marandi's party gained immense popularity in the state, especially in the Santhal Pargana area.

In the year 2020, Babulal Marandi returned to BJP and became the main face of BJP in Jharkhand politics.
