BAFTA 2026 honours Dharmendra in Memoriam segment

Mumbai: Late Bollywood actor Dharmendra was honoured at the BAFTA 2026 Awards show. The legendary actor was remembered during the Memoriam segment, along with several other big names who passed away last year. Hearing Dharmendra’s name struck a chord with Indians across the world. It was also a recognition for India on the international platform.

The event that took place at London’s iconic Royal Festival Hall paused to remember legendary artists. Jessie Ware sang The Way We Were as images of the celebrated artists appeared on screen.  Diane Keaton, Terence Stamp, Val Kilmer, Catherine O’Hara, Rob Reiner, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Tom Stoppard, Brigitte Bardot, Lalo Schifrin and Michael Madsen were honoured along with Dharmendra.

 

Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2025, after struggling with prolonged illness. He was survived by wives,  Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Esha Deol. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously for his unforgettable contributions to cinema.

The actor, who was born in Ludhiana in 1935, made his entry into films through My heart is mine, we are mine in 1960. He then went on to act in movies like Bandini, Hey Milan Ki Bella and Khamoshi. However, it was in 1966 that he rose to stardom. His movieFlowers and stoneswas a massive hit.

In the years that followed, Dharmendra became a significant name in the Indian film industry. My Village My Country, Seeta and Geeta, shut up shut up, Sholay and Yaadon Ki Baraat were some of his films which garnered him a massive following of fans.

The legendary actor was last seen in Ikkis. His passion for cinema remained the same till his last breath.

Meanwhile, the BAFTA 2026 saw the presence of Alia Bhatt as one of the presenters. It was a proud moment for the country and its cinema.
