Balen Shah to Meet Indian Diplomat: Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah has decided to make a major change in his foreign policy just a few months after assuming power. After becoming Prime Minister, he made it a rule not to meet foreign diplomats alone. Now the news is that he will meet the ambassadors of India and China separately this week. This is being seen as a major change in his foreign policy.

It has been a little more than 100 days in the tenure of Prime Minister Balen Shah. During this period he had to face two major public protests. The first protest was over the imposition of custom duty on the India-Nepal border, while the second was sparked by the self-immolation of a ride-share driver against police action. Amidst domestic challenges, he has now shown softness in his foreign policy also.

Will meet the Indian Ambassador

According to reports, Balen Shah will meet India’s Ambassador Naveen Srivastava and China’s Ambassador Zhang Maoming separately this week. It is believed that he wants to give the message of maintaining balanced relations with both the neighboring countries. For this reason, preparations are being made to hold both the meetings on the same day.

After becoming Prime Minister, Balen Shah had said that he would not meet any foreign diplomat alone. Under this policy, he had refused to hold separate meetings with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, China’s Deputy Commerce Minister and senior US officials. Instead he just held a group meeting with all the foreign ambassadors.

Questions were raised on the policy

This new arrangement of Balen Shah was widely criticized in Nepal’s diplomatic circles and media. Many former officials and foreign policy experts described this as going against established diplomatic traditions. Senior journalist Keshav Pradhan had said that India’s refusal to meet separately with the Foreign Secretary and the Indian Ambassador was never seen before in Nepal’s history. Now Balen Shah’s changed stance shows that the government is trying to adopt a practical path in its foreign policy.
