Nepal takes a new bet on the Lipulekh issue; Balen Shah wants to make Britain a mediator, know what is the plan?

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah, while giving a big statement in the Parliament on Sunday, has demanded the mediation of Britain (UK) on the disputed Lipulekh issue with India.

Balen Shah has tried to internationalize this dispute by raising it above the bilateral level, which is being seen as a strategic maneuver against India.

What did Balen Shah say in Parliament?

Prime Minister Balen Shah Gave a long speech in Parliament on Sunday, in which he expressed his views openly on the border dispute. He said that after becoming the Prime Minister, he realized that the matter is not just one-sided.

According to Shah, ‘Not only has India occupied Nepal’s land, but Nepal has also occupied Indian land at many places.’ He suggested that the right way forward in this matter is for both the parties to sit at the table and talk and find a solution.

Emphasis on Britain’s role

Balen Shah proposed that India-Nepal The governments of India should form a joint team of historians, surveyors and geographers who can determine the boundary on a scientific basis. He also claimed that there have been positive signals from India in this regard and both the countries are considering forming a team of experts.

However, the most shocking statement was regarding the role of Britain. Shah said he has also contacted the UK government on this issue. He argues that since the present-day boundaries of India-Nepal were decided during the British Raj, Britain should take an interest in resolving this dispute and intervene as an arbitrator.

What is the root of the dispute?

Tensions between Nepal and India escalated recently when on April 29, India and China announced the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the Lipulekh Pass. Nepal expressed strong objection to this and called it a violation of its sovereignty. Nepal claims that according to the Sugauli Treaty of 1816, the entire area east of the Mahakali river, including Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani, is its part.

On the other hand, India has completely rejected these claims of Nepal. The Government of India has a clear stand that the Lipulekh Pass is the ancient route to Kailash Mansarovar and is under the effective control and use of India since 1954. India has said that Nepal’s unilateral claims are not based on historical facts and are completely unacceptable.
