Chaos as soon as it is released
‘Bandit Queen’ was first released in September 1994, but the film was banned within days. The film’s violent and nude scenes, as well as its bold treatment of Phoolan Devi’s life story, angered the censor board and Phoolan Devi herself. The film’s costume designer and actress Dolly Ahluwalia went to jail and discussed with Phoolan Devi about her clothes and experiences of abuse. During this, Phoolan Devi also showed the wounds on her body to Dolly. Dolly started crying after hearing her story, to which Phoolan Devi said, “I have only told you half of it.”
