Bangladesh angry with Assam CM Himanta Sarma’s statement, summoned Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka

New Delhi, May 1. Bangladesh has expressed displeasure over the comments of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and has summoned India’s acting High Commissioner in Dhaka Pawan Badhe and lodged a formal protest with him.

This information has come to light in media reports. According to UNB News Service, an official said that Director General (South Asia) Ishrat Jahan conveyed Bangladesh’s side to the Indian diplomat on Thursday.

It is noteworthy that Himanta Sarma had said in a social media post last week that 20 foreign nationals were caught in Assam and sent back to Bangladesh. Sarma had said, ‘Rude people do not understand soft language. We keep this in mind while driving out infiltrators from Assam. 20 illegal Bangladeshis were sent back last night.

Disgraceful for India-Bangladesh relations…

Ishrat told the Indian diplomat that such statements weaken the spirit of friendly relations between the two countries. The official described these statements as insulting to Bangladesh-India relations and expressed Dhaka’s displeasure. Ishrat Jahan stressed the importance of exercising restraint while talking on sensitive bilateral issues.

It is noteworthy that Hasina government fell in August 2024 after the violence that broke out in Bangladesh and after the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus came to power, there was a huge decline in the relations between India and Bangladesh. India and Bangladesh are trying to rebuild bilateral relations after Tariq Rahman became the Prime Minister after the victory of Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the parliamentary elections held in February this year.
