Bangladesh: BNP acting president Tariq Rahman returns to Dhaka after 17 years
Dhaka, Agency. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) working president Tariq Rahman reached Dhaka on Thursday. He has returned home from Britain after a gap of 17 years. Rahman’s return comes at a time when a new wave of unrest and political instability is continuing in the country following the assassination of prominent youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi which has engulfed the whole of Bangladesh.
Hadi played an important role in removing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. BNP Standing Committee members welcomed him at the airport. He was also accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rehman and daughter Zaima Rehman. Tariq Rehman (60) is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and has emerged as the main candidate for the post of Prime Minister in the upcoming general elections. Jiah is ill and is being treated. BNP emerged as a leading party in the changed political scenario after the violent student-led movement ousted Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government from power on August 5, 2024. This movement was called the July Uprising. Jamaat-e-Islami and its Islamist allies, which were the party’s ally during the BNP’s tenure from 2001 to 2006, are now seen as its main rivals as the interim government has dissolved the Awami League through an executive order under the country’s stringent anti-terrorism law. Rehman’s return to Bangladesh is also considered important because Jamaat is trying to increase its influence in the fragmented political scenario of the country. Speculations intensified after BNP announced Rahman’s return on December 12. Earlier on November 29, in a Facebook post, Rehman had said that like any child, he too is yearning to be with his seriously ill mother in this time of crisis.
