Bangladesh boycotted T20 World Cup! Team will not come to India, ICC rejected BCB’s demand
T20 World Cup Crisis: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced to boycott the 2026 T20 World Cup to be held in India. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had rejected BCB’s demand to change the venue. After this, acting on the orders of Bangladesh government, BCB refused to send its cricket team to India. This decision means that Bangladesh cricket team is now out of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
ICC had warned BCB that if the team does not tour India, it will be disqualified from the 2026 World Cup. However, Bangladesh is adamant on its point. After refusing to go to India, now Scotland can replace Bangladesh in the tournament. Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Thursday (January 22) that this decision has been taken at the behest of the government.
ICC’s shock
The ICC on Wednesday rejected Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to shift the T20 World Cup matches to Sri Lanka. Cricket’s governing body made it clear that the matches will be held as per the scheduled schedule as there is no credible threat to the safety of Bangladeshi players, officials or fans at any venue of the tournament in India.
This decision has been taken in the ICC Board meeting held through video conference. This meeting was called to discuss the situation after BCB expressed concern over playing in India and demanded a change of venue.
ICC sources told PTI that 14 out of 16 members have voted against BCB’s request to shift the matches. ICC has given BCB one more day to reconsider and take a final decision. An ICC source said that only the Bangladesh Cricket Board and Pakistan voted in favor of the request to shift the matches, while all other members voted against it.
Scotland can take part
Asif Nazrul, sports advisor to the Bangladesh government, reiterated on Tuesday that the national team will not go to India under any circumstances. There is every possibility that if Bangladesh decides to withdraw from the tournament, then based on the current ranking, Scotland can take its place. Bangladesh had to play all four of its group stage matches in India. Of these, three were to be in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.
The controversy related to Mustafizur Rahman increased further
The crisis started when BCCI, on its instructions, dropped Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team for this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). After this, Bangladesh Cricket Board announced that its team will not go to India for the World Cup group stage matches to be held in Kolkata and Mumbai.
Bangladesh wanted to shift its matches to Sri Lanka. He is in Group C of the World Cup along with West Indies, Italy, England and Nepal. In its recent meeting with ICC officials in Dhaka, BCB proposed that its team be placed in Group B instead of Ireland. This group includes co-hosts Sri Lanka, Australia, Oman and Zimbabwe.
