Bangladesh Cricket Board bans former selector, female captain Jahanara had accused of sexual harassment

BCB Banned Monjurul Islam: Bangladesh cricket has taken an important step. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has banned former cricketer Manjurul Islam from being directly or indirectly involved in all cricket-related activities. The decision was taken at the board meeting on February 22 and the step has been taken on the basis of allegations of sexual harassment made by former Bangladesh women’s cricket team captain Jahanara Alam. Jahanara had claimed that Manjurul Islam had sexually assaulted her during the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

What came out in the report of the inquiry committee?

Bangladesh Cricket Board had formed an independent committee to investigate the matter. The committee reviewed four allegations, two of which were not corroborated by the available evidence, while Manjurul Islam’s conduct was found to be inappropriate in the other two cases. The committee said his conduct was not in line with professional standards and some of his acts amounted to misconduct and harassment under Supreme Court guidelines.

Manjurul Islam’s contract with BCB was till June 30, 2025. The BCB officially confirmed the ban after a meeting held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday and said that the committee’s recommendations are being further reviewed. If necessary, additional steps will also be taken.
