People are not returning alive from jail! Awami League’s sensational allegation against Yunus government, big revelation on custodial death

Bangladesh Jail Deaths: Bangladesh’s main political party Awami League on Wednesday made serious allegations against interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, saying there has been an alarming increase in the number of deaths in jail and police custody across the country during his rule. The party claims that custody has no longer become a place of safety but a symbol of fear and insecurity.

According to the Awami League, their leaders and workers are being arrested in politically motivated cases and later dying under suspicious circumstances. The party alleged that attempts are being made to suppress the cases by calling these deaths as illness or suicide, whereas the reality is much more serious.

No concrete investigation after the deaths

In a statement issued by the party, it was said that the purpose of detention should have been reform and protection under the law, but during the Yunus government, this system seems to be a complete failure. Awami League says that the government is neither transparent about these deaths nor is any kind of accountability being fixed.

Awami League clarified that this is not just an issue of human rights violations, but there is a clear and dangerous pattern of deaths in which party workers and leaders seem to be the targets again and again. The statement said many detainees were detained for long periods of time, were not given adequate medical care, and there was no concrete investigation into their deaths.

serious failure in custody management

Citing figures from last year, the Awami League said that during the tenure of the Yunus government, at least 119 people died in jail, while 21 people died in police custody. Additionally, 26 people died in illegal actions and 106 people died in incidents related to political violence. The party says these figures highlight a serious failure in law and order and custody management.

Silence instead of implementing reforms

The Awami League alleged that the Yunus government had come to power with promises of change and reforms but it not only failed to fulfill these promises but also misled the public. According to the party, the government chose the path of silence and denial instead of intervening, conducting an independent investigation and implementing reforms.

The statement concluded that in today’s Bangladesh, arrests are no longer a sign of the rule of law but reflect a state that has abdicated its basic responsibility to keep people in custody alive.
