Bullet before ballot! Bangladesh will get weapons as soon as nomination is approved, chaos over Yunus’ decision
World News In Hindi: A major and controversial decision of the interim government before the parliamentary elections to be held in Bangladesh in 2026 has become a topic of discussion across the country. The government has issued a special policy to provide arms licenses and gunmen to election contesting candidates and so-called politically important persons.
While the government is calling it a necessary step related to security, opposition parties, election analysts and human rights organizations are calling it a decision that will promote election violence.
What is the new policy of the government?
Under this special policy issued by the Home Ministry, two categories of people have been allowed to apply for arms license. The first category includes those who have been declared politically important by the government. The second category includes those candidates whose nomination papers have been accepted for the 13th parliamentary election.
Advisor on Home Affairs Lieutenant General (retd) MD Jahangir Alam Chaudhary has clarified that the candidates contesting the elections will be allowed to possess weapons. Apart from this, the weapons of the candidates whose weapons were earlier deposited in government custody will also be returned.
Concern about law and order
This decision has come at a time when the law and order of Bangladesh is already considered fragile. The fall of the Awami League government following the 2024 student movement has led to increased administrative instability. The police system is said to be weak and violent clashes have occurred in many areas between supporters of potential candidates.
What makes the situation more serious is the non-recovery of weapons looted in the last one and a half years, due to which there is an atmosphere of fear among the common citizens. The Election Commission (EC) has also expressed displeasure over this entire matter and has said that no prior consultation was taken from it on this policy.
What is the government’s stand?
The government argues that in the current situation there are serious security threats to election candidates and political leaders. In view of the possibility of political violence, threats and attacks, it is necessary to provide arms licenses and gunmen so that the candidates can participate in election activities without fear.

The statistics of political violence are scary
According to the report of human rights organization HRSS, 96 incidents of political violence were recorded across the country in the month of November alone. Of these, 12 people died and at least 874 people were injured. The reasons for these incidents have been said to be the fight for supremacy, ticket disputes and factionalism within political parties.
