Bangladesh Elections 2026: Historic victory of BNP, these three Hindu candidates reached Parliament… New hope for minority representation!
In the 13th parliamentary elections of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has given a strong performance and won an overwhelming majority. The Tariq Rehman-led party has secured more than two-third majority by winning 211 to 212 seats in the 299-seat Parliament. At the same time, the main rival Jamaat-e-Islami got only 68 seats, while some other seats went to independent and small parties.
This election was the first major democratic test after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s regime, where the public demanded the restoration of democracy and reforms. Awami League was prevented from contesting the elections, leaving the contest primarily between BNP and Jamaat.
Positive sign for minority community!
Amid concerns over the safety of minorities in the elections, the good news is that three Hindu candidates won on BNP tickets. All these are strong faces of BNP and their victory is considered to strengthen the minority representation.
1. Gayeshwar Chandra Roy – Dhaka- won from 3 seats.
Senior BNP leader and standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy defeated Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammed Shaheenur Islam by securing 99,163 votes. He has previously been a Minister of State and this is his strong comeback. His victory from a key area like Dhaka holds special significance.
2. Nitai Roy Choudhary – Won from Magura-2 seat.
Former Minister of State (Youth and Sports) Nitai Roy Chowdhury secured 1,47,896 votes, defeating Jamaat’s Mustarshid Billah by 30,000+ votes (Jamaat candidate got 1,17,018 votes). He has a kinship relationship with Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, which reflects the political strength of the family.
3. Advocate Deepen Dewan – Captures Rangamati seat.
Advocate Deepen Dewan secured 31,222 votes defeating independent candidate Pahal Chakma (21,544 votes). His victory from the hilly Rangamati constituency is significant for the tribal-Hindu community.
These three victories highlight the inclusive face of BNP, especially when Jamaat’s lone Hindu candidate faced defeat. Overall, the number of minority candidates was 79, but success mainly went to these three faces of BNP.
What next?
Tariq Rehman may soon become Prime Minister. The process of government formation has started and congratulations are pouring in at the international level. This victory marks the new beginning of democracy in Bangladesh, where minorities are also becoming strongly involved in mainstream politics.
