Bangladesh elections: BNP close to majority, Tariq Rahman returns with a bang after 17 years

Dhaka, 12 February. Sounds of change of power are being heard in the general elections of Bangladesh. In this sequence, after the voting on 299 parliamentary seats, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is moving towards majority and in the results declared so far, the party has won 120 seats. The figure of 150 seats is necessary to form the government.

Meanwhile, BNP chief Tariq Rahman, son of former Prime Minister late Begum Khaleda Zia, has made a comeback in Bangladesh after 17 years. In this sequence, he has demonstrated his political hold by winning big from both the constituencies.

Shock to Jamaat-e-Islami alliance

On the other hand, the alliance of 11 parties contesting the elections under the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami had to be content with 38 seats till the last news was received. Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman has won from Dhaka-15 seat.

Political experts believe that if the current trend continues, a big change can be seen in the politics of Bangladesh. However, the final decision regarding government formation will depend on the complete results.

NCP Accused of trying to change the results

National Citizens Party (NCP) leader Nasiruddin Patwari posted on his Facebook page and claimed that ‘efforts are being made to change the results, everyone should be careful. Those who have not yet come to protect their polling stations, should come forward. Party convenor Nahid Islam has appealed to supporters to go to all eight constituencies of Dhaka. He said that everyone should come forward to protect the voting rights of students and common people.
