New Delhi: Tarique Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh after 17 years of exile, is set to write a new chapter in politics today. Following his landslide victory in the general elections, he will be sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh today, formal preparations for which have been completed. The swearing-in ceremony will take place in Dhaka.
Tarique Rahman is the President of the BNP, succeeding former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Guests from several countries have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from India will arrive in Dhaka to attend the event.
According to media reports, the swearing-in ceremony for MPs will take place at 10 am at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Initially, there were reports of Narendra Modi’s arrival, but Om Birla’s name was officially confirmed.
What time will the swearing-in ceremony take place?
Following last week’s landslide victory, MPs will be sworn in first at 10 am, followed by the swearing-in ceremony for the main cabinet at 4 pm. A meeting of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has been called at 11:30 am to elect the leader of the parliamentary party.
Representatives from several countries, as well as numerous international figures, are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh are also expected to attend.
General Elections Held After the Coup
For information, Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign from her post and flee the country due to the violence during the Zen-Gi movement. Mohammad Yunus was elected as the interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Subsequently, the 13th parliamentary elections were held on February 12th.
Voter turnout in these elections was 59.44 per cent. Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, was barred from contesting. In this election, Tariq Rahman’s BNP has won 209 out of 297 seats, while the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami has won 68 seats.
