Big blow to fundamentalists of Bangladesh, High Court refuses to ban 'ISKCON'

Dhaka: The High Court on Thursday refused to ban ISKCON's activities in Bangladesh. Earlier, the court was requested to take suo motu cognizance and pass an order banning the activities of ISKCON in Bangladesh. The court was informed that the government authorities have taken necessary steps in this regard.

Bangladeshi news website 'The Daily Star' reported about this. Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Monir Uddin presented before the High Court bench on Wednesday some newspaper reports about the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Also requested the court to take suo motu cognizance in this regard and direct the government to ban the organization and impose section 144 in Chittagong, Rangpur and Dinajpur.

The court had asked the Attorney General to inform about the steps taken by the government regarding the recent activities of ISKCON. The Attorney General's office placed this information before a bench of Justice Farah Mehboob and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury in the High Court when the proceedings began on Thursday.

According to Bangladeshi news 'Daily Star', the bench expressed hope that the government should be alert about the law and order situation and the safety of life and property of the people of Bangladesh. He made this comment when Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haq and Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Asad Uddin told the High Court bench that three separate cases have been registered in connection with the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif and the activities of ISKCON and 33 accused have been arrested in this connection.
