Bangladesh: India’s acting ambassador summoned, formal protest lodged against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement
Dhaka. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry summoned India’s acting High Commissioner Pawan Badhe and lodged a formal protest over some of the comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma. This information came to light in the news released in the media. Director General (South Asia) Ishrat Jahan conveyed Bangladesh’s side to the Indian diplomat on Thursday, an official said, according to UNB News Service.
Sharma had said in a post on social media last week that 20 foreign nationals were caught in Assam and sent back to Bangladesh. Sharma had said, “Rude people do not understand the language of love. We remember this again and again when we expel from Assam those infiltrators who do not go back on their own. For example, these 20 illegal Bangladeshis who were deported last night.”
Ishrat told the Indian diplomat that such comments weaken the spirit of friendly relations between the two countries. The official described these comments as ‘derogatory’ to Bangladesh-India relations and expressed Dhaka’s displeasure. Ishrat stressed the importance of exercising restraint while discussing sensitive bilateral issues.
Relations between India and Bangladesh soured after the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government came to power following the fall of the Hasina government in 2024. Efforts have been made to reinvigorate India-Bangladesh bilateral ties after Tariq Rahman became Prime Minister following the victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the parliamentary elections held in February.
