Foreign affairs expert Dr. Brahmdeep Alune has said that amidst the political turmoil in Bangladesh, on the demise of former PM and Khaleda Zia, now a wave of sympathy is sure to spread in Bangladesh. Till now there were indications that Bangladesh Nationalist Party will come to power, but with the death of Khaleda Zia in Bangladesh, it is almost certain that BNP will return to power. When asked the reason for sympathy, Brahmadeep Alune said that there could be three reasons for it.
1. Khaleda Zia victimized leader
First, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia was the first woman in the country to become the PM. During his tenure, he had worked to bring Bangladesh’s economy back on track, which was taken forward by Awami League chief and former PM Sheikh Hasina. Khaleda Zia is also seen as a victimized leader in Bangladesh. His death will be considered due to prison, illness and political isolation. BNP can unite supporters emotionally. Anti-incumbency may become stronger among anti-government voters.
2. Public’s attachment towards BNP
Secondly, during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina, BNP workers spread across the country were harassed. As a result of that, there was a student movement in Bangladesh in the year 2024 and Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country. Due to Sheikh Hasina’s excessively strict attitude towards the opposition parties, the people there have again increased their attachment towards BNP, which is at its peak now. Her workers spread across the country will spread the word among the people that due to the betterment of the people, she became an eyesore for the government, which became the reason for her demise. In such a situation, Khaleda Zia’s demise during the election process could create a wave of sympathy. BNP leaders will have to do the work of making it reach the people.
3. Date Rahman raised hopes
The third thing is that after Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, if anyone can handle the country in the eyes of the people, then it is Tariq Rehman. People there believe that Rehman is an educated person, politics is inherited in his blood. In such a situation, he can work to bring the deteriorating situation of Bangladesh back on track. Right now Rahman has succeeded in maintaining this hope among the people. Then, considering the urgency of the times, he has also indicated changes in the party’s policies.
Then, the responsibility of carrying forward the political legacy of Zia ur Rehman and Khaleda Zia is considered on Tariq Rehman. Tariq Rehman’s role is decisive in organizational decisions and election strategy within BNP. Due to Khaleda Zia’s health and legal limitations, the daily politics and future direction of the party are considered to be tied to Tariq’s leadership.
4. International pressure
Bangladesh politics is no longer limited to just the domestic level. Western countries are emphasizing on fair elections. If an environment of fair elections is created along with the sympathy wave, then BNP can get benefit. After Awami League not being elected, western countries are also thinking that it would be better if BNP comes to power instead of Jamaat.
5. Two party cadre based in Bangladesh
There are only two party cadre based parties in Bangladesh. One of them is BNP and the other party is Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League. Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP are not cadre based parties. This is the reason why both the parties want the elections to be postponed. Both the parties have announced to contest elections under alliance to stop BNP. As far as Inquilab Manch is concerned, it is being considered as a temporary rise due to student movements, but there is no remote possibility of it forming the government.
