Bangladesh PM Tariq Rahman made major changes in the army
Bangladesh’s new PM Tariq Rahman made major changes in the army. Brigadier General Hafizur Rahman was recalled from India and made Major General. The new appointments in the top command and DGFI will strengthen the structure and strategy of the army.
Dhaka: Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has made major changes in the country’s army as soon as he took office. These changes will also affect the strategic commands and the main military intelligence agency of Bangladesh. Tariq Rehman has already implemented many important decisions, showing the strength of his political leadership.
Prime Minister Rahman first recalled Brigadier General Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, posted as Defense Advisor in Bangladesh High Commission in India, back to Bangladesh. Hafizur Rahman has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed GOC of 55th Infantry Division. This step is being seen as an attempt to give freshness and new direction to the army under his leadership.
Changes at the top level in the army
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, these changes made by PM Rahman are significant at the top level of the army. Lieutenant General M Mainur Rahman, who previously served as GOC of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC), has been appointed Chief of General Staff (CGS). He will replace Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, who recently retired.
Also, Major General Qaiser Rashid Chaudhary, working as Brigadier General in the Army Headquarters, has been appointed Director General of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). He will take up this important responsibility after getting promotion to the post of Major General.
Tariq Rehman’s new government
Tariq Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a two-thirds majority in the elections held on 12 February 2026. After this, on 17 February, Tariq Rehman took oath as Prime Minister. With this swearing-in, the 18-month rule of Muhammad Yunus ended and the new administration was completely ready to take charge.
As soon as Prime Minister Rahman came to power, he gave first place to army and security among his priorities. The top level reshuffle made by him is not only aimed at strengthening the military leadership but also at making Bangladesh’s security architecture more effective.
Bangladesh Defense Advisor returns to India
The process of returning Brigadier General Mohammad Hafizur Rahman from India to Bangladesh is also being seen as a big strategic step. Hafizur Rahman was working as a Defense Advisor in Bangladesh High Commission in India for some time. His return is expected to add new leadership and experience to the Bangladesh Army.
This decision is believed to affect the military and diplomatic relations between the two countries. Work will be done on the new structure and strategy of the army under the leadership of Hafizur Rahman.
