According to the police, when the team reached the spot after receiving the information, Amrit Mandal was found seriously injured. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. After this the body was sent to the mortuary of Rajbari Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
Criminal charges and claims of local people
Police officials said that at least two criminal cases were already registered against Amrit Mandal at Pangsha police station, including a murder case. Local people claim that Samrat had maintained a criminal gang and was involved in extortion and other illegal activities for a long time. It is being told that he was hiding in India for a long time and had recently returned to Bangladesh. After returning, he allegedly demanded extortion from Shahidul Islam, a resident of the village.
How did the violence erupt?
According to local sources, last night Samrat along with his associates reached Shahidul Islam’s house to collect extortion money. Meanwhile, the people present in the house raised the cry of ‘chor-chor’. As soon as people heard the sound, people gathered at the spot and the angry mob beat the emperor fiercely. During this violence, some of his associates fled from the spot, while one associate Mohammad Salim was caught by the people. Police have recovered a pistol and a single-shooter gun from Salim.
Concern increased after the murder of Dipu Chandra Das
This incident has happened at a time when, just a few days ago, Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh district on alleged blasphemy charges and his body was later burnt. That incident had given rise to heavy criticism even at the international level.
Interim government response
The Mohammad Yunus-led interim government had reacted strongly to the Mymensingh lynching, saying, “We strongly condemn the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh. There is no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.” However, such continuous incidents have deepened concerns regarding the safety of minorities, especially the Hindu community.
Growing atmosphere of dissatisfaction and insecurity
With the second consecutive incident of mob lynching coming to light, it is clear that the pressure on law and order and social fabric is increasing in Bangladesh.
