Bangladesh Violence: Funeral of youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi today under tight security, violence not stopping after death
Dhaka/New Delhi. Prominent youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi in Bangladesh will be cremated on Saturday amid tight security. After Hadi’s death, unrest has spread in the country. The media wing of the interim government of Bangladesh said that the funeral prayers will be held at ‘South Plaza’ in the ‘National Parliament Building’ at 2 pm. State mourning was declared in Bangladesh after Hadi’s death.

Hadi was one of the key leaders during last year’s student-led protests. Due to these protests, the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fell. Hadi was a candidate in the general elections to be held on 12 February. Masked gunmen shot Inquilab Manch spokesman Hadi in the head in the Vijayanagar area of central Dhaka on December 12 as he was launching his election campaign.

He later died during treatment in Singapore. After the announcement of his death on Thursday night, violence and unrest started in different parts of the country. “As per the wishes of the family, it has been decided to bury Hadi near the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and his funeral prayers will be offered at Manik Miyan Avenue after Zuhar (afternoon prayers) tomorrow,” Inquilab Manch said in a post on social media on Friday. The party said people would not be able to have the last glimpse of Hadi’s mortal remains. People have been requested to pray for Hadi while maintaining peace.

According to ‘Dhaka Tribune’ newspaper, a large number of security personnel have been deployed in and around the Parliament complex and a tight security cordon has been maintained in the entire area. The government has also banned flying drones in the area and people who want to attend the funeral have been asked not to bring any bags or heavy objects. Dhaka Metropolitan Police has said that traffic will be stopped from Khejur Bagan Crossing to Manik Mia Avenue in view of the large number of people arriving, bdnews.com reported. According to the news, people from different parts of the country joined the condolence procession in Shahbag on Friday, while people started coming to Manik Miyan Avenue from Saturday morning. It has been said in the news that the number of people is likely to increase further by afternoon.
