ODI World Cup 2027: West Indies’ tension increased, Pakistan’s defeat opened the way for Bangladesh to win the World Cup.

ODI World Cup 2027 Qualification Scenario: Preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027 are gradually gaining momentum. This will be the next big ICC tournament after the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year. The picture of which teams will participate in this tournament is gradually becoming clear. Meanwhile, the recent ODI series played between Bangladesh and Pakistan has increased the problems of West Indies. Now the question is whether West Indies will be able to make it to the World Cup directly or will they have to play the qualifiers.

Ranking equation changed due to Bangladesh’s victory

Recently, Pakistan team had reached Bangladesh to play a three-match ODI series. In this series, Bangladesh performed brilliantly and defeated Pakistan 2-1. Bangladesh took the lead by winning the first match, while Pakistan made a comeback in the second match. However, in the third and decisive match, Bangladesh registered a thrilling victory and won the series.

This victory has also affected the ICC ODI rankings. Before the series, Bangladesh was ranked tenth in the team rankings, but after the win it moved up to ninth position. On the other hand, West Indies team has slipped one place to tenth position. Although the official rankings have not been released yet, the available data points towards this change.

World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia

ODI World Cup 2027 is to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Since South Africa and Zimbabwe are the host nations, they have received direct berths in the tournament. Apart from this, eight teams will directly reach the World Cup on the basis of ICC ODI ranking. That means the teams which remain in the top eight in the rankings till the cutoff time will take part in the tournament without playing qualifiers.

In such a situation, if we look at the current situation, both Bangladesh and West Indies teams are currently out of the top eight. This means that as of now, both these teams may have to play qualifiers to make it to the World Cup. However, the final cutoff date is still far away, so there is every possibility of change in the ranking.

Victory is necessary to improve ranking

If Bangladesh and West Indies want to make it to the World Cup directly, they will have to win as many ODI matches as possible in the coming months. Only if we win, the ranking will improve and there will be a chance of reaching the top eight. Talking about the upcoming schedule, Bangladesh team will play ODI series against South Africa in December. The West Indies team is going to play an ODI series against India in September-October. The results of these series will largely decide how easy or difficult the path will be for both the teams in the World Cup 2027.
