Bangladeshi cricketers threaten to boycott domestic matches after director’s allegations
A new controversy broke out in Bangladesh cricket on Wednesday when Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) publicly distanced itself from the controversial statement of its director Nazmul Islam. Following this statement, players threatened to boycott domestic matches, increasing uncertainty over the national team playing in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India.
What did Nazmul say on the commitment of national cricketers?
The controversy started when Nazmul questioned the commitment of national cricketers, saying that some players did not properly utilize the support and resources given to them by the board. His statements were widely considered disrespectful, prompting a strong reaction from former international players, players’ organizations and fans on social media.
BCB official statement
Responding to this, BCB issued an official statement and expressed regret for any unpleasant or derogatory comments. The board clarified that Nazmul’s statements do not represent the official policy of BCB. The statement said that BCB supports any statement only if it is issued by the official spokesperson of the board or through the media and communication department. Statements made outside the official channels of the Board are personal.
It was also reported that the players had threatened that if the board does not take clear steps and protect the honor of the players, they will not play in Thursday’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match. The board warned that disciplinary action would be taken against anyone who insults the cricketers or harms the reputation of Bangladesh cricket.
In its statement, the BCB reiterated respect for the players and said that “players are at the heart of Bangladesh cricket and their contribution and well-being are given the highest priority.” Nazmul’s statements came at a time when tension is increasing between the ICC and BCCI regarding the venue of the T20 World Cup. Recently, Nazmul called former captain Tamim Iqbal an Indian agent, when Tamim advised the board not to take decisions based on emotions. BCB has refused to go to India citing security concerns. Especially when BCCI directed Kolkata Knight Riders to release fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the 2026 IPL team.
Mohammad Ashraful condemned the administrative attacks
Former captain Mohammad Ashraful condemned the administrative attacks, saying issues should be resolved internally and such statements demoralize players and harm the image of Bangladesh cricket. BCB Finance Committee Chairman Nazmul Hossain also said that if Bangladesh stays out of the World Cup, there will be no financial loss to the board, but the loss will be to the players, as match fees and performance bonuses are given directly to the players. He also said that no compensation will be given to the players.
This controversy has further increased the political and administrative tension in Bangladesh cricket, creating many uncertainties regarding the team’s participation in the T20 World Cup.
