Bangladeshi suspect arrested in Saif Ali Khan stabbing
A man suspected of being a citizen of Bangladesh was arrested by the police in Mumbai on Sunday and is thought to be the main suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan. Shocked the Indian film industry, as well as the residents of Mumbai, the incident occurred on 16 January 2025, when Bollywood star Khan, one of the most prominent actors in India, was stabbed six times during a burglary attempt in his house.
Doctors have confirmed that 54-year-old Khan is out of danger and has been discharged from the hospital after he was operated upon for stab wounds on his spine, neck, and hands.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam said at a press conference that prima facie evidence suggests the accused, who goes by the name of Vijay Das, is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad. The accused is believed to have entered India illegally and has been working for the last five or six months at a housekeeping agency in Mumbai under a false identity.
Shehzad was arrested by the police from the outskirts of Mumbai. The police have sought his custody for further investigation. Mumbai police had earlier arrested another prime accused on Friday. Another person was arrested in Chhattisgarh state on Saturday.
The attack has raised a lot of concerns about security and policing. There are calls for stronger measures to protect high-profile individuals like Khan.
Post initial identification, officials from RPF held a video call with police from Mumbai and verified the person’s identity, and after getting clearance, Kanojia was arrested. Subsequently, he will be produced in court by Mumbai police with charges related to the attack on Saif Ali Khan.
It took place early in the morning hours of Wednesday in the house of the actor located in Bandra, Mumbai. An attempted burglary turned into an aggressive struggle with Saif Ali Khan after the intruder confronted him. He was stabbed by the assailant six times. Two were very deep and close to his spine.
Despite receiving critical injuries, Saif Ali Khan’s bold fight deterred the thieves from making the loot successful. Nevertheless, his injuries were severe and he required immediate hospitalization.
Akash Kanojia’s arrest is an important milestone in this murder investigation. It demonstrates how all of India’s law enforcement agencies come together to serve justice for a killer.
